FAQ

About Me

You don’t seem to have a very big vocabulary or a decent grasp of grammar

Correct, I don’t. Being a Dutchman from South Africa this is my best effort. If something is to irritating for you to live with, contact me with the correction and I shall rectify it.

You really do seem to be a grumpy old man

Yes I do, and no apologies. I’m actually a very easy going man with the ability to see the funny side in most situations. This is where I vent. My safety valve. Leaves me free to laugh the entire day.

Birds

How sure are you about the distribution areas?

The distributions mentioned in the Port Elizabeth section is from my own observations and in no way a complete list. The distributions for the rest of South Africa is gleaned from the internet except where otherwise stated.

Your descriptions of the distribution areas are rather vague

I apologize for that. I do intend for this to be a reasonably accurate reference work. I am hoping to place proper distribution charts for each specie, I just need to find the time to do the maps.

Your names don’t seem to correspond with mine?

The common names on this site are the taken from the International Ornithologists’ Union’s (IOC) Name List(v3.1) and the order, family, genus and species name are taken from their Master List(v2.7). Download these from their website.

Your classifications are incorrect

In all probability you are correct. To be very honest I have no idea about APG II and APG III. I allowed myself to be influenced by the classification available on Wikipedia knowing that it may be outdated. If you can supply the correct info or if you can point me to an easy to use website that’s up to date please contact me.

General

How often do you add content?

I’m currently rebuilding the website. Once that is done the general principle is to add an animal or plant every Sunday. Daily comments will be just that, daily updates. World War II articles will be added as time permits but at least one every week. At the moment content is transferred on a daily basis.

The Venting Machine

Why don’t you link directly to the article under discussion?

For two reason, the main one being that few of the print articles are available in the online version, and the second reason, ensuring the links are current will become a full time occupation. Therefore I link to the newspaper’s website, a quick search should find the article if it does exist online.

World War II

Some of your information seems very different from that which we were taught?

That may very well be true. I started with the basic facts as generally accepted. Most of it gleaned from Wikipedia. I do a lot of reading and as I read I flesh out the articles. I realize that some authors my have their own agenda, therefore I tried to give all the information I obtained and suitable citations are supplied. I encourage you to read the books or documents and draw your own conclusions.
